Henley & Partners have published the ranking of the “most powerful” passports in 2017, taking into account how many countries can be visited without applying for a visa. As in 2016, it’s once again German citizens who have the best passport with 176 countries accessible visa-free out of a possible 218. Sweden comes second (175 countries) while 5 countries are sharing the third place: Denmark, Spain, USA, Finland & Italy. Their passports enable to travel to 174 countries visa-free.
The UK was on top of the ranking from 2013 to 2015 but is now sharing the 8th place with 7 more countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway & Singapore. Brits have visa-free access to 173 countries.
Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan are at the bottom of the ranking with their passports providing visa-free access to less than 30 countries. Check out the complete ranking >
According to Dr. Christian H. Kälin, the Chairman of Henley & Partners, the 2018 ranking might be affected by the changing geopolitical climate: “We have witnessed several major events recently that are likely to have an impact on global mobility – including Brexit and the election of US President Donald Trump. Both can be interpreted as steps toward restricting movement and creating barriers to entry.”
